Condensed summaries of faculty research, built with the Observable Notebook Kit and served statically over Cloudflare.

What's here

Each entry is a single faculty member's research, distilled from their publication record into one readable page: an accessible explanation of the core idea, how the method works, and what the lab is doing now. Every page is self-contained static HTML — no build step needed to view it.

Pipeline

  1. Research a faculty member — pick from a department listing (currently UC Berkeley condensed matter physics), read through their papers, and write a condensed summary with the Observable Notebook Kit. Output lands in a lastname_firstname/ folder in this repo.
  2. Catalog it — a row is added to the presearch table in the machinedata Postgres database (DigitalOcean) with the slug, name, field, description, and public link.
  3. Embed it — the summary text is embedded with text-embedding-3-large (3072-dim, via OpenRouter) and stored in a vector column for similarity search across entries.
